Mussels with Beer, Bacon & Moseley Bog Wild Garlic

Introducing some famous Belgians

Tomorrow night we are launching our range of Belgian Beers. To intice you into a visit and a bit of sampling, we are offering the chance to taste any 4 of our 30 Belgian Beers, plus a supper of a classic Flemish dish …  Mussels,  all for just £5.

The mussels come with a twist …  instead of adding the standard French white wine, we will be adding Flemish beer and bacon. Topped off with crusty bread. OK no frites and mayonnaise but still a great treat, especially as Bruce went down Moseley Bog this afternoon and picked a load of wild garlic.

So here is the mussels recipe. Serves 2 for a main course.


Great Beer and Good Food

4 Rashers of Smoked Bacon

3 Shallots

A handful of wild garlic

Dash of Olive Oil

1 kg of live mussels

1 bottle of beer

Parsley for garnish


1. Heat a large, lidded saucepan and add the olive oil.

2. Chop the garlic, shallots and bacon then add to the pan cook for one minute.
3. Add the mussels and pour in the beer. Mix through, turn up the heat and put the lid on.
4. Cook, shaking the pan every now and again until all the mussels have opened and are cooked. Remove any mussels that remain closed.
5. Spoon into serving bowls with the juices, sprinkle with parsley and serve with rustic bread.
